“DR. ILIE LAZĂR” MEMORIAL HOUSE
Ilie Lazăr was a personality of historical Maramureș, but also of Romania. He was drafted into the army, and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire caught him in Ukraine. He deserted with his team and went to Bucovina, after capturing a train. Together they liberated Chernivtsi, climbing the town hall tower and raising the Romanian flag, at only 22 years old.
Ilie Lazăr was born in the house in Giulesti and participated in the organization of the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia, on December 1, 1918. He was also the youngest delegate from the Great Union. After the creation of the national dream, he was a member of the National Peasant Party. For his beliefs, he was arrested in Tămădău in 1947 and released in 1964. Ilie Lazar died on November 16, 1976, remaining a symbol of resistance.
The house where he was born was built by priest Vasile Mihaly. The year of construction is mentioned on the beam: 1826. It is a traditional house from Maramureș, with three rooms, having an entrance hall, but also a long hall along the whole back of the house, built later. The roof of the house is made of reeds, made in four large sections. The museum exhibition includes both pieces of furniture specific to the area, but also photos and documents that reflect the activity of politician Ilie Lazăr, doctor of law. Memorial House “dr. Ilie Lazar” is a preserved in-situ museum.
