‘ALEXANDRU SAHIA’ MEMORIAL HOUSE
Alexandru Sahia (1906-1936) was a Romanian writer and journalist, born in the Monastery village. After finishing primary school he left the village, but remained permanently impressed by what he experienced in his native places. He made his official debut at the age of 20, signing his work with the name of Mănăstirescu, as a tribute to his roots.
The house in which he lived evokes both the life and work of Alexandru Stănescu (Sahia). After a trip to the Orient, he was struck by the sound of this word, which means “true truth”, and took the name for himself. In 1929, in Tudor Arghezi’s publication, Bilete de papagal, the writer used the pseudonym Sahia for the first time instead of his surname. The “Alexandru Sahia” Memorial House was opened to the public in 1969, and at the time it was inaugurated with much pomp and ceremony, attended by both political and literary personalities.
