Museum of the History of Avdarma Village

In the heart of Gagauzia, the Museum of the History of Avdarma Village tells the story of a community that carefully gathered its past, document by document, photograph by photograph, object by object. Inaugurated on 21 November 2011, the museum is connected to the Cazmalî brothers: Ilia financially supported the project, Dmitri coordinated the construction, and Ignat created the exhibition concept and spent 13 years collecting, forming, and classifying the museum collection.

The exhibition traces the history of Avdarma from 1563 to the present day, spanning several eras: the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Romania, the Soviet period, and the Republic of Moldova. At the heart of the story is the villager of Avdarma: the person who worked the land, preserved the faith, endured wars, famine, and repressions, left for distant lands, or returned home. Across its three halls, 1,174 artifacts are on display: documents, decorations, books, religious objects, old currency, jewelry, military items, medals, sports trophies, and glimpses of everyday life. The photographs on display, mostly captured by the same photographer, depict the people of Avdarma at different ages, in various roles, and throughout different moments of their lives.

The careful classification of the artifacts and the rigor of the display give the museum a distinct clarity: objects are placed with purpose, photographs find their voice, and documents complete, step by step, the history of Avdarma village. A special place is held by the church archive of the “St. Michael” Church, preserved from 1820 to 1944, as well as artifacts related to the Nogai spring “Tatar çöşmesi”, including two coins bearing the tamga of the Nogai Khan. The museum extends beyond the building itself through routes to the “Can acısı” Memorial, the “Tatar çöşmesi” spring, the chapel dedicated to the victims of typhus and famine, and other sites that preserve the village’s memory.
