THE WOMEN’S CAVE

Located in Baia de Fier, Gorj County, Peștera Muierilor (translated as The Women’s Cave) is one of the most spectacular and frequently visited cave systems in Romania. Formed approximately 3–4 million years ago by the underground erosion of the Galbenul River, the cave stretches across nearly 8 kilometers of galleries, with about 860 meters open to the public. The lower three levels remain protected as speleological reserves, due to their scientific and ecological importance. The cave is renowned for extraordinary paleontological discoveries, including over 183 cave bear skeletons (Ursus spelaeus) and a 35,000-year-old human skull, one of the oldest traces of Homo sapiens ever found in Europe.

Visitors can embark on a guided 35–40-minute tour through the illuminated gallery, enjoying a constant underground temperature of 10°C year-round. Along the route, they will discover striking natural formations such as the Altar Hall, The Organ, The Small Dome, The Great Dome, and The Turk, named by early explorers as far back as 1870. Recognized as Romania’s first electrified cave, Peștera Muierilor is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and adventure travelers, offering a unique journey into the geological past and ancient human presence in the Oltenia region.
