Neolithic Sanctuary of Parța
The Neolithic Sanctuary of Parța, located about 15 km south of Timișoara, is one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Southeastern Europe. Excavated systematically from the 1970s onward, the large cult building uncovered in the central area of the settlement belongs to the final phase of the Banat Culture (6th millennium BC). The rectangular structure, divided into two rooms and built from clay, wood and wattle, was exceptionally well preserved due to the fire that collapsed and sealed the entire construction, protecting its ritual inventory.
The main chamber housed the monumental statue of a double deity: a female figure with an emphasized abdomen, symbolizing fertility, paired with a male figure wearing a bull-shaped mask — the bull being a sacred symbol of strength and vitality. The altar, offering trays, portable hearths, ritual vessels and the skulls placed in niches reveal complex ceremonial practices, including animal sacrifice, offerings and rites connected to the regeneration of nature. Numerous artefacts were discovered, such as vessels, figurines, flint blades and tools used for preparing ritual food.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the sanctuary is its astronomical function: during the spring equinox, sunlight entered through a carefully positioned opening and illuminated precisely the bull’s head of the monumental statue, marking the symbolic beginning of nature’s renewal. The reconstructed sanctuary, built as part of an interregional project and administered by the National Museum of Banat, allows visitors to step inside a unique 7,000-year-old sacred space and discover one of the most impressive expressions of Neolithic spirituality in Europe.
