SchwabenLand – The Museum of Banat and Transylvanian Swabians and Romanians, Charlottenburg

SchwabenLand – The Museum of Banat and Transylvanian Swabians and Romanians, located in the unique circular village of Charlottenburg in Timiș County (founded in 1771 by German families from Baden-Württemberg), is a space dedicated to the multicultural rural life of Banat. The museum operates inside a traditional house built in 1905 by the Schmidt family and restored in 2024. Through the objects on display, the museum aims to recreate the everyday atmosphere of the Swabian, Romanian, Hungarian, and Serbian communities that lived together in this region.

The exhibition is organized into themed rooms, each illustrating an aspect of traditional life. The museum reimagines the interior of a Banat household—from the dowry chest, weaving loom, shuttles and tailoring tools, to the traditional oven where the village women used to bake dozens of loaves at once. The first room, called “Prânzitor”, is followed by “The Good Stove”, “Women’s Crafts”, “The Bread Oven”, and “Men’s Crafts”, from which two smaller spaces branch out: Warm Spaitz and Cold Spaitz, and in the basement, a generous cellar. The room dedicated to men’s crafts, showcasing manual tools once used in households and workshops, recalls the period when all activities were performed without electricity.

Outside, the museum preserves the agricultural and craftsmanship area: plows, seeders, mills, presses, corn binders, and the household well—objects typical of Swabian rural homes. The outdoor space also hosts educational and interactive activities for children, with a focus on passing down traditions. The museum is part of the SchwabenLand Tourist Center, alongside a German-style restaurant where visitors can also discover authentic local gastronomy. The SchwabenLand Tourist Center also organizes educational and recreational activities for both children and adults, turning the visit into a complete cultural experience.
