The “Traian Vuia” Museum

The “Traian Vuia” Museum, inaugurated in 2012 in the inventor’s hometown, is a branch of the National Museum of Banat and a tribute to one of the pioneers of world aviation. The building was constructed between 2008–2010, with the official opening marked by an aviation demonstration, reflecting Vuia’s passion for flight.

The main attraction is the scale model of the “Vuia I” aircraft, built in 2006 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the historic flight at Montesson, France, where in 1906 Traian Vuia achieved the first autonomous takeoff with a heavier-than-air machine. Visitors can admire the model from all angles thanks to the elevated viewing platforms. The museum also displays additional models, including “Vuia II” and the prototype “Vuia I helicopter”, accompanied by technical panels and explanatory materials.

Upstairs, a dedicated section presents Vuia’s biography: his childhood in Banat, his studies in Făget, Lugoj and Budapest, his years in Paris — then a major centre of aeronautical innovation — and his involvement in representing the interests of the Banat Romanians at the Paris Peace Conference. Documents, patents and photographs complete the story of a visionary pioneer, while the museum continues to host symposia and events dedicated to aviation and the history of technology.
