Collection of Aesthetic Iron Mineralogy “Constantin Gruescu”

The Collection of Aesthetic Iron Mineralogy “Constantin Gruescu” in Ocna de Fier is one of Romania’s most valuable private mineral collections, founded by the self-taught mineralogist Constantin Gruescu (1924–2020). His passion began in the 1960s while working underground in the local mines, where he gathered the so-called “flowers of the mine” discovered after blasting. Over more than six decades, Gruescu collected over 2,000 mineral specimens, many of which were later donated to museums in Iași, Reșița and Bocșa. In 1980, he transformed his own home — known today as the “House of Goodness” — into a museum dedicated to these discoveries.

The central piece of the collection is the famous “Gruescu” quartz twin, a world-unique specimen formed by two crystals intersecting almost perpendicularly, creating a silhouette reminiscent of a white cross. The museum also preserves the largest quartz crystal in the collection, originating from the Ruschița quarry — a massive specimen with two generations of crystallization, admired by visitors for both its appearance and its distinctive energy. The display includes other spectacular twins, especially from the Danila–Reichenstein zone, renowned in the mineralogical world for their perfectly symmetrical crystal angles.

Today, the collection includes around 1,000 remaining specimens, representing the essence of a lifetime’s work. Visited by pupils, students, geologists and travelers from across the country, the “Constantin Gruescu” Collection stands as a key reference point for the mineralogical heritage of the Banat region and a unique place where the beauty of crystals reveals the geological history hidden beneath Ocna de Fier.
