Dorin Ioan Ciocănel Ethnographic Museum, Răcășdia
The ”Dorin Ioan Ciocănel” Ethnographic Museum in Răcășdia, Caraș-Severin County, is one of the most representative rural heritage museums in the Banat Highlands (Banatul Montan). The village of Răcășdia, documented as early as 1440, has a rich historical background, with archaeological evidence indicating continuous habitation since ancient times. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the settlement developed significantly, being recorded in the Mercy census of 1717 and reaching nearly 500 households by 1873. The museum originated from the impressive personal collection of Dorin Ioan Ciocănel, a local collector who donated his entire archive to the community in 1995, laying the foundation for one of the most valuable ethnographic museums in western Romania.
The museum preserves an extensive collection of over 400 traditional objects, displayed in thematic rooms that recreate the interior of a typical Banat rural household. The first room features traditional furniture, handwoven textiles, religious icons, festive clothing and household artifacts that reflect everyday life in historic Banat villages. The second room highlights traditional occupations and tools: agricultural implements, lamps, clay and wooden vessels, vintage writing machines, wartime helmets, locally produced soda bottles and the iconic „curcubă” drinking gourds used for serving homemade brandy. Among the rarest pieces is the wooden baby cradle dating from 1787, crafted from willow, along with chitele, the distinctive ornamental fringes unique to the traditional costume of Răcășdia.
The third exhibition space houses an extraordinary collection of 166 sculptures and paintings by artist Gheorghe Rouă, originally from Vrăniuț. His works, created in wood, marble and metal, depict major Romanian cultural and historical figures such as Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creangă, Ion Luca Caragiale, and heroes Horea, Cloșca and Crișan. Today, the Dorin Ioan Ciocănel Museum is an essential cultural center for preserving Banat ethnographic heritage, attracting tourists, researchers and students interested in traditional crafts, rural history and the cultural identity of the Banat region. It stands as a key destination for cultural tourism in western Romania, offering an authentic insight into centuries-old village traditions.
