THE MUSEUM – FROM THE COUNTRY ROAD TO SCREEN
Rural Museums from Romania
The Muzee de la sat platform brings together museums, local collections and cultural landmarks from rural communities in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, making them more accessible to the public through digitisation, documentation and online promotion. Projects co-funded by the Romanian Administration of the National Cultural Fund (AFCN) have played an essential role in developing this digital infrastructure dedicated to rural cultural heritage and in increasing the visibility of the cultural sites included in the project.
Launched on 1 December 2021, the platform currently features 144 interactive 3D virtual tours covering 126 cultural landmarks in 120 villages. The project began in the Moldova region of Romania, followed by Muntenia in 2022, Dobrogea in 2023, Maramureș and Satu Mare in 2024, Oltenia and Banat in 2025, and Crișana in 2026, when the project also expanded for the first time to the Republic of Moldova.
Each cultural landmark is documented through a comprehensive process that may include 3D scanning, photography, video, interviews, research and the collection of local stories. The virtual tours are integrated into the Muzee de la sat platform and, where possible, into Google Street View, Google Maps and Google Earth, together with photographs, videos, documented texts and practical visitor information. In this way, each new edition contributes to building an increasingly comprehensive digital map of rural cultural heritage.
One of the platform’s main objectives is to turn virtual visitors into real-life visitors. The digital experience is not intended to replace a physical visit, but to inspire and encourage it: people can discover a museum online, learn its story, find out where it is located and what else they can visit nearby, and then include it in their actual travel itinerary. In this way, Muzee de la sat aims to connect cultural heritage with tourism, education and the life of local communities.
The www.muzeedelasat.ro platform is free to access and available in Romanian and English, while the project is complemented by the Muzee de la sat mobile app, available free of charge for iOS and Android. The motto that expresses the project’s mission is: “We digitally preserve tangible cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations.” Looking ahead, Muzee de la sat aims to continue expanding its digital infrastructure dedicated to rural heritage, connect new cultural landmarks and develop a shared map of cultural heritage across Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The project is developed by Real Tour Ro and, for eligible stages, co-funded by the Romanian Administration of the National Cultural Fund (AFCN).
