Czech House – “Český dům”, Gârnic

The Czech House – “Český dům” in Gârnic, located in the southern part of the Banat Highlands (Caraș-Severin County), is a unique cultural museum dedicated to the history and traditions of the Czech community that settled in Romania nearly two centuries ago. The first Czech families arrived in 1827–1828, coming from the region between Prague and Pilsen, and founded several villages: Gârnic, Ravensca, Bigăr, Eibenthal, Șumița, Nova Ogradena and Frauwies. Today, the Czechs of Banat form one of the most well-preserved ethnic minorities in Romania, maintaining their language, customs and religious traditions. In order to preserve objects that were being lost as many locals emigrated to the Czech Republic, the Union of Slovaks and Czechs purchased a traditional Czech household in 2014, transforming it into a community museum.

The house is arranged as an authentic Czech rural homestead, complete with barns, storage rooms and workshops showcasing traditional tools and crafts. Visitors can explore agricultural equipment, wooden sledges, carts, threshing machines and handmade tools used by the Czech settlers, who brought with them trades such as wheel-making, coopering and carpentry. Inside, the kitchen has been preserved exactly “as it was 60 years ago”, displaying original household objects, while the “front room” — the formal guest room used only on holidays — presents festive clothing, dowry items and embroidered textiles. The museum also highlights the distinctive Czech folk costume, composed of three layered aprons and heavily starched fabrics, along with thematic displays dedicated to wedding customs, baptismal traditions, funerary rites and community celebrations such as Fășang and Pârșang.

The Czech House is curated with passion by Merhaut Iosif, librarian and former director of the Gârnic Cultural Center, who has transformed it into a vibrant cultural space for visitors and locals alike. Through its authentic exhibits, restored household structures and carefully preserved traditions, “Český dům” offers a rare insight into the everyday life of the Czech settlers in the Banat Mountains. Today, it stands as one of the most important sites for ethnographic tourism in western Romania, providing an immersive understanding of the cultural identity and heritage of the Czech community in Banat.
